Artistic Discoveries in European Schoolyards

Bouke Oldenhof

Born 1957 he wrote his first play in 1991, a couple of chamber plays followed. Till now he wrote some 15 plays for child- ren and young people, played by groups as De Citadel, Laagland and the theater in Frisian language Tryater. A good example of his play for teenagers is Medusa (1999). The play was rewarded with the Hans Snoekprijs 2000. Recently he adapted Antigone (2008) and Czechovs Seagull (2009) for the Theatre De Citadel. The main characters of his plays are unimportant people striving to make something more of their life. In 1995 the play on the famous Dutch football player Abe Lenstra in the football stadium of Heerenveen rose attention from Germany to New York. More than 500 actors, football players, musicians, singers and dancers played for an audi- ence up to 10.000 people. The success of this play made that he was often asked for texts of mass-productions, such as De engel en de duizend doden (1997), De Heeren van het Veen (2006) and Kinderzegen (2009). After a career teaching and developing curricula mothertongue and dramaturgy, Oldenhof lives since 1999 as a full-time playwright, and father of three daughters, in an old farmhouse and pub on the Frisian country side.
